about digitalcraft: projects & concepts
By now only a few institutions are dealing with the methodical reappraisal of the history and the historical milestones of PC games. In a first step digitalcraft has built up a platform that, first of all in the shape of a selective link collection, brings together and comments information spread all over the web as well as pages regarding ROMs and emulators. Next to the web presence an archive of selected games has been put up. They can be played right at the page and will soon be offered for download via digitalcraft.org.
Here recent trends in web design are reflected and classified in ten categories: agencies/groups, designers, downloads, film field, institutions, children, brands, music field, projects, playgrounds and advertisement. The sites’ presentation is accompanied by a describing documentation and a valuation that considers aesthetic and functional criteria (animation, graphics, interactivity and navigation). Each link that has been included is supplemented by a description. Here the particularities and specifications of the respective page are underlined and, if possible, the authors are named. Furthermore screenshots are available.
In cooperation with the former operators the “Internationale Stadt Berlin” has been included into our collection. In the time between 1995 and 1998 it used to be Germany’s first online community. Therefore the entire data of the former IS-Berlin server was ported and the documents were archived. Working as an extensive study, this collection project has the task to scientifically work up the phenomenon of virtual communities: the first steps of the WWW and the original idea behind it, aspects of identity and communication behaviour in the virtual space, aspects of democratic structures in the web as well as political and cultural exchange.
Next to the extensive online presentation of digitalcraft’s work on the web site of the same name, the project offers various possibilities of connection and cooperation for who is interested. In our ComputerLabs a wide offer is waiting for beginners as well as professionals. Informal learning in courses, suited to the user in terms of media pedagogy, is put great emphasis on. Special block workshops, such as for instance “Digital Craft STUDIO”, created in cooperation with Frankfurt’s Städel school, complete the program, accompanied by CD-ROM documentations that present the single course offers.
